yet another IM client.

if you have gmail, you now have another IM login. If you client supports jabber here’s how you login to your gmail IM.

If you’re getting the 405 error with GAIM, or simply cannot connect anymore, follow the updated configuration instructions below!!! You have to use an @gmail.com address to login from now on.

Server: talk.google.com
Username: youremail@gmail.com
Password: yourpassword

Note: If you can’t login, try to turn off ‘Secure Messaging’ or ‘Encryption’… etc.

– TRILLIAN USERS: Someone just told me that they got it working with Trillian, but I can’t verify this. Just go to Trillian’s plugin page on their site and download the Jabber plug-in, install it, and configure a new connection as below:
“server : talk.google.com
port : 5222
Use legact SSL for connection : not checked”

How to set it up with GAIM on Windows/Linux, or Adium on the Mac:
– For iChat, just enter the information above.
1. Add an account, select “Jabber” as the protocol.
2. Your screen name is everything before the ‘@gmail.com’.
3. Server is ‘gmail.com’.
4. Click “show more options” and make sure “use TLS if available” is checked. Leave “Force old SSL” and “allow plaintext…” unchecked for now. Connection port should be 5222, connection server should be ‘talk.google.com’ without the quotes.
5. Ta-da! Just login and you should be good-to-go.

Another user reports the following:
“weird, I’ve never sent you email from my gmail, and now that you’re on my buddy list on google talk, it autofilled your email address, and alias on my gmail”
– The “/me” command works too, even on iChat. “/me says hi” translates to “smash says hi” or whatever if you’re not familiar!
if you get bored msg me px5150@gmail.com

gmail.. 50 invites

i think there is a need for someone to write some software that will take advantage of the free 50gb of storage Google is giving away.

Something to automagicaly signup and manage the 50 accounts for you.
A gmail filesystem, supported by multiple accounts, that you can partition up any way needed.
Provide private/public access to the files via web/webdav gateway

and if you want one just ask. but i don’t think i can give anyway, they’re like roaches.

future of livejournal?

Will Yahoo! aquire Six Apart, who recently bought Livejournal?
Will we soon be inundated with targeted pay per click ads like Google’s blogger users? Will something that has been largely user supported and free to most everyone, turn into a tool for profit, and internet domination?

Here are the reasons why all this might happen, and soon.
http://www.internetstockblog.com/2005/01/yahoo_lacks_a_b.html

Granted making money is good, but I wonder how many LJ’ers this will piss off. Would Yahoo! even continue to develop the opensource Livejournal product? Yahoo! should just develop their own blog platform, maybe even just partner with Six Apart, and use the livejournal code to build their money machine. If Microsoft can pimp out 1.5 million users, from thin air in the last 2 months or so for their blog platform, why can’t Yahoo!? Yahoo! go look elsewhere.

I can only hope we don’t get whored out in these ways.

## Content how you want it, free of comercials.
If your a Firefox user, and you have the adblock plugin installed, add the Google AdSense javascript link to your block list, and their ad’s go away! (All but the ones that are actually embedded into google, and gmail.)

1994 IBM Manual Describes 2005 Google Patent

theodp writes “The USPTO kicked off 2005 by awarding Google a new patent for highlighting the search term in a retrieved document by changing at least one of a color, font, style, effect, and size. But more than a decade earlier, a 1994 IBM BookManager Library Reader User’s Guide described the concept of search emphasis, the use of color or intensity to make search matches stand out from the rest of the text in a softcopy document. As such, wouldn’t it be a nice gesture if Google - who boasts they can make money without doing evil - put the patent into the Public Domain? “
