I hate to be critical but, Om Malik seems to think Google cares that you use their encumbered interface to view your mail.
How about making GMail available over IMAP? Oh wait, that is going to cut into the money Google makes from advertising…never mind.
You can already get your email without using the encumbered interface and Ads, via their POP Download.Although if they supported IMAP things would be very nice. Also if you really don’t want to view their ads use the CustomizeGoogle Firefox plugin.
A great feature I really like is being able to use Gmail to send email with any address of mine securely.
My mail provider effectively doesn’t have Secure SMTP because Cox blocks outgoing TCP port 25, and sadly my provider also doesn’t use a secondary secure mail port.
I use Gmail for two purposes really.
A “junk box” which I use to signup for things and automatically forward to my regular IMAP account.
Send email securely with TLS, since both my ISP and mail provider refuse to play nicely. (I’ve pretty much accepted that it’s a good thing Cox blocks tcp/25, otherwise the internet traffic would be 80% spam from many more zombies)
At least I can use the power of Google to search through all the mail I’ve sent.
