advertising dollars and security

I hate to be critical but, Om Malik seems to think Google cares that you use their encumbered interface to view your mail.

How about making GMail available over IMAP? Oh wait, that is going to cut into the money Google makes from advertising…never mind.

You can already get your email without using the encumbered interface and Ads, via their POP Download.Although if they supported IMAP things would be very nice. Also if you really don’t want to view their ads use the CustomizeGoogle Firefox plugin.

A great feature I really like is being able to use Gmail to send email with any address of mine securely.
My mail provider effectively doesn’t have Secure SMTP because Cox blocks outgoing TCP port 25, and sadly my provider also doesn’t use a secondary secure mail port.

I use Gmail for two purposes really.
A “junk box” which I use to signup for things and automatically forward to my regular IMAP account.
Send email securely with TLS, since both my ISP and mail provider refuse to play nicely. (I’ve pretty much accepted that it’s a good thing Cox blocks tcp/25, otherwise the internet traffic would be 80% spam from many more zombies)

At least I can use the power of Google to search through all the mail I’ve sent.

another reason gmail rocks.

Use Gmail to send from your other email addresses.

Once you setup your other email accounts, if you use another email client, like I do.
Setup your client to use Gmail’s SSL enabled SMTP server. (I’m so fucking tired of having all my email sent via cox’s unsecured uber filtering bullshit gallore SMTP servers.)

Now my email is way more secure. I’m not forced to use Cox’s SMTP servers. I can send email and not have to worry about it being scanned/sniffed locally by Cox, and or filtered for when I submit spam to spamcop.

And another bonus, when I travel, and find myself some wifi, I most likely will not have to change my SMTP server, and of course it’s secured so less likely someone will be able to read my sent mail. (yea a lil redundant)

whee!

yet another IM client.

if you have gmail, you now have another IM login. If you client supports jabber here’s how you login to your gmail IM.

If you’re getting the 405 error with GAIM, or simply cannot connect anymore, follow the updated configuration instructions below!!! You have to use an @gmail.com address to login from now on.

Server: talk.google.com
Username: youremail@gmail.com
Password: yourpassword

Note: If you can’t login, try to turn off ‘Secure Messaging’ or ‘Encryption’… etc.

– TRILLIAN USERS: Someone just told me that they got it working with Trillian, but I can’t verify this. Just go to Trillian’s plugin page on their site and download the Jabber plug-in, install it, and configure a new connection as below:
“server : talk.google.com
port : 5222
Use legact SSL for connection : not checked”

How to set it up with GAIM on Windows/Linux, or Adium on the Mac:
– For iChat, just enter the information above.
1. Add an account, select “Jabber” as the protocol.
2. Your screen name is everything before the ‘@gmail.com’.
3. Server is ‘gmail.com’.
4. Click “show more options” and make sure “use TLS if available” is checked. Leave “Force old SSL” and “allow plaintext…” unchecked for now. Connection port should be 5222, connection server should be ‘talk.google.com’ without the quotes.
5. Ta-da! Just login and you should be good-to-go.

Another user reports the following:
“weird, I’ve never sent you email from my gmail, and now that you’re on my buddy list on google talk, it autofilled your email address, and alias on my gmail”
– The “/me” command works too, even on iChat. “/me says hi” translates to “smash says hi” or whatever if you’re not familiar!
if you get bored msg me px5150@gmail.com

Now we just need to add some kind of raid support for the multiple gmail accounts.

It’s comming.

beautiful!

gmail and the ever expanding limits of your inbox.
currently at 2052.995 Megabytes.

gmail.. 50 invites

i think there is a need for someone to write some software that will take advantage of the free 50gb of storage Google is giving away.

Something to automagicaly signup and manage the 50 accounts for you.
A gmail filesystem, supported by multiple accounts, that you can partition up any way needed.
Provide private/public access to the files via web/webdav gateway

*drool*

and if you want one just ask. but i don’t think i can give anyway, they’re like roaches.

Just had an interesting idea for a gmail/firefox extension use.

the extension works with the gmail, and u can use it like a IM. Heh, it would definately be a little over the top. but it would be neat to have your convo’s to be indexed and searchable.

Bad Behavior has blocked 1172 access attempts in the last 7 days.
