home again

Here I am, home again.
We left the hotel this morning around 10am, and got into town about 30 min ago, also lost an hour of time when we crossed the border into Arizona.

Marriott Residence Inn Costa Mesa Internet Speed Test

My dad and I have both been having pretty silly issues with the supposed High Speed Internet here where we are staying.
From having to re-login to their captive portal every 24 hours, even if your in the middle of something, drag ass slow access to my dad’s work VPN. OK, so I think the internet here is only fractionally better than dialup. It’s a stretch, but for the most part very true. I hate how companies can get away with saying Broadband is anything faster than 192kbps on average. Just because you can use the service with an ethernet cable or fancy USB connection doesn’t mean anything unless the bandwidth can make a dent in the size of it’s upstream pipe.

The internet here sucks, but at least it’s internet. (I couldn’t be writing this without it.) The connection is provided by a DSL modem/router which is in the room, which my guess goes to a wiring closet somewhere on the hotel premises next to some possibly ancient looking PBX that looks like HAL 9000. The Ethernet connection from the device works only on my dad’s laptop. Fortunately the Elastic DSL device has a USB port, which Linux happily recognizes as an Ethernet adapter.

[ 31.976260] eth1: register 'cdc_ether' at usb-0000:00:03.0-1, CDC Ethernet Device, 00:30:52:05:c4:3c

Using the Ethernet on my dad’s laptop only links up at 10mbps Half-Duplex. The link from the DSL to where it goes, is very slow, both up and down stream.

[note: Thanks to the internet here, I just lost what I've written since my last draft save, bah. Hopefully broadband reports won't mind me redoing the tests.]

Their speed test comes in two flavors; Java Speed Test, and also in a Flash Speed Test. On the Java page, it notes. “Unlike FLASH based speed-tests, our upload payload cannot be compressed, so it gives the correct result even on satellite or wireless connections.” Basically do not trust it’s readings. So stick with the Java one for more correct numbers. I also forgot to copy some of the data I wanted from each speed test. Ohwell.

Ok, well since I mentioned it earlier, here is my results from the Flash based speed test.

quickie update

I’ve been in California since Saturday night. Had the opportunity to see and hangout with some friends I haven’t seen in a while.
The doctors appointment I had on Monday went great. He wrote a STAT(not status) report, and I picked it up today, for my Valentines (Court) Date. His report was very good.
I went to bed last night feeling slightly under the weather, and this morning, woke up feeling like death.
That said this trip is going well so far. I have another appointment next month with the good Doctor, and treatment is in my future.
I would probably be more ecstatic about all this if I didnt have a cold/sinus thing going on. But I generally am susceptible to getting colds. I was hoping to hangout more with people, but I don’t feel that possibly getting anyone sick is a good thing.

I’ve also had my fill of sushi, and Vietnamese food. I went to this sushi place with my father, and an old work friend of his called Kura, in Costa Mesa, it was pretty neat environment, it has a rotating sushi bar, which revolves around the entire restaurant. I’ve also eaten a couple times at one of my favorite Pho places in Costa Mesa, Pho 99, that I eat at whenever I’m in town because one of the people who work there recognizes me each time, which you do not see very often in employees working in the food industry.

ok, why does a “quickie” update, usually turn into a longer post? I had just a few thoughts I wanted to jot down, but felt compelled to write a little bit more.

2 nights, and ~1 day left in California, then the trek back home. Maybe another post or two before I leave…

I am beat down tired, worn out, and hurting really badly.

the title says it all about how i feel to a degree.
i kept a pretty detailed written log of todays journey. some of which i’ll go into here.
my stay in California is extended one more day.
yet another thing has popped up that SCIF did not approve, and did not get accomplished the last time I was here in California.
lessons learned.
it’s cheaper to rent a car for 7 days, than it is 5 days, and 4 days, and only slightly more expensive than 1 day/20 hours, atleast with the current daily base rate I got. $69/day.
If I would have gotten the 7 day rental it would be $273 with tax. Whereas the 4 day will be $343 with tax. So that’s how the rental car business makes money.
I have to go down to the front desk tomorrow before 11 am to extend my hotel.

i’ve been running around since 10 am. Sat in the doctor’s office for over 2 1/2 hours before being seen by the Nurse, and then Physicians Assistant, then by the Doctor.
Had major confusion about the Doctors offer to take over my case. later resolved to he can’t, but his consult, and referrals are still OK to my knowledge.
I need to make some calls tomorrow, to figure out where I’m going for the Neuro consult, and also provide my Primary QME with the referral info provided by the Pain Management Doctor who I saw earlier today.
At this moment in time, the only reason, I’ve come to California is to have the Range of Motion testing, I got an unexpected referral, and also again the Neuro Consult, which is up in the air, as to whether or not it will get completed in this trip.
I need to speak with my Primary QME.
tomorrow my sister and nephew are flying to AZ.
I would rather not leave, and get more accomplished, and also save on the rental car as a bonus, but likely things will fall through.

oh yeah, i couldn’t get the time with the Psych today, but I did provide him, or at least the receptionist with the information and letters I received from my old/former Flashcom workers.
I need to write a letter, with regards to all my issues with his report, which there are many.

There has been a lot of confusion in my case, everyday something new, or confusing comes up, and here I am stuck in the middle. I don’t want to be here, I want out, I want to get healthy, and treated, and feel relief. I’m tired, hurting, and in pain everyday. I wish I could see an end in sight, but I cannot. It’s quite depressing. I’m just going to lay here in my hotel room, and try and relax. At least I ate today at a great vietnamese food place PHO 99 on harbour blvd.
maybe later, I’ll get another cup of ramen.

I should lay down now. Did I mention I’ve been up since 5:30 am? I was hoping to maybe have energy to see some friends, but I’m spent. I asked for a 8am wake up call, felt weird, considering I was up, showered, and ate at the fabulous breakfast bar.

Damn the WIFI here sucks, I’ll just write a bit more till it comes up so I can post this. OK so I wrote up the tags, still no wifi… yes, it’s back. quick post it!

reminder again to post pictures, prolly after I get home to AZ and recoup for a few days.

in newport beach

after a long day of travel, i’m tired. quick day recap.
i didnt have to walk as far as usual from the bus stop, luckily i got dropped off near an information booth, and politely asked for a skycap. this guy was interesting to say the least. a merchant marine.
the wifi is still free in PHX.
also smoking is still OK in terminal 4 at the bars.
the wifi access from the Mexican food bar place is iffy, and gets knocked out easily. the $8 chimichanga kinda made up for it. (insert bitch about how much allowance I have for lunch costs.)
the flight from PHX to SNA was ok, my seat was 4A, so it was easy to get off the plane, and I had a window seat view, and no one sitting in front of me, so I had leg room.
i got an upgrade on the rental car, to a chevy HHR, amazing it had more leg room than it looks in the driver seat. much more than say a PT cruiser.
the wifi here at the best western was giving me major issues when using wpa_supplicant to manage my connection. there are no less than 4 access points within range that use a default channel of 6. (frequency: 2.4370 GHz ) 2 of which have WEP keys. lucky me, the free wifi for me which has the highest signal level is on that channel, so wpa_supplicant wasn’t happy. so I had to use the “manual” iwconfig setup in gentoo.
i was hoping to have more energy, but no, my clock woke me too early today, 5am AZ time. I suppose this is better than what it was all week long, 3am.
so here I am in my hotel room, right off PCH, tired, sleepy and bored. i should sleep ok. I got some extra pillows from the hot hotel clerk. wow, what a looker. tall, beautiful smile. i tried making small talk, but it hasn’t worked out well, i’ve bought two dr peppers, a bottle of water, and cup of ramen noodles, in 3 trips down there, to have a cig, or because I was thirsty. she likely gets hit on quite a bit, and surely has a bf.
so yeah, here i am in the hotel room, bored, watching “the war at home” i really like that show.
tv without tivo is boring, full of commercials, and i miss the back button.
when i made the reservation i asked for a roll in shower, with a shower seat, but i guess they only have seats, which is fine, except that the shower curtain doesn’t quite work right when the seat is unfolded.
wow, smoking hot hotel clerk at the Newport Beach best western. sorry, just had to say that again.
ok, this isnt really a quick recap, but longer drawn out badly typed recap.
tomarrow i have a 10am appointment in fashion island, then back to costa mesa, for the rest of the day, because i dont have an appointment time.
my body isnt happy from all the travel today, i feel like i need to go (BM), but i can’t. my back is about 7/10, neck 5/10. feet are numb and tingly, low back sharp and burning.
ive been reading all the pre CES coverage, and i wish i was there, i haven’t been in 6+ years.
ok, now im rambling, time to stop.
must stay up to see simpsons… :)

[edit]also took about 51 pictures, maybe 10-20 worthy of posting, and also 3 videos or so, i forget. takeoff, landing from FHU to PHX. reminder, to post them when i feel up to it.

california

I’ll be in California again for a couple days next week. I’m flying in Sunday, leaving on Tuesday. ( 2006.01.07 to 2006.01.09 )
Right now I don’t have anything to look forward to after getting there except for maybe the return trip.
My sister and nephew are coming out on the 9th to Arizona to visit for my fathers birthday, 2006.01.11. I haven’t seen them in a year or two.

All day Monday I have appointments from Newport, to Costa Mesa.

Open Invite, if anyone would like to meet up for dinner Sunday, or Monday, that would be most excellent.
I would throughly enjoy the company, and a break from the isolation of BFE Arizona.

stop here. over emotional below..

Oh Look, it’s my Junk!

It looks like the next time I go through PHX on my way to SNA, which should be very soon hopefully, I may get scanned by a new fangled dangled device at our airports; Controversial X-ray. [via] Vision

The agency is expected to provide more information about the technology at an official unveiling later this month. For now, the agency will say only that one machine will be up and running at Sky Harbor’s Terminal 4 by Christmas.

My trips through PHX usually start at Terminal 2, then off to Terminal 4, on my way to Orange County.

After arriving at,a gate on the far end of, Terminal 4, a Skycap will push me down the causeway, out through security an onto the Bus loading area. Most of the time I end up waiting here by myself, as the Skycaps do not go between the terminals. From here, I wait about 3-10 minutes for a bus.
This older terminal, in the desert, doesn’t have any real shade the last time I went through in the dead of summer, and it was about 100 degrees F. So after wrangling my stuff into the bus, a quick trip through around the airport brings me to Terminal 4.

I generally have a long walk ahead of me, about 1/4 mile depending on where the bus will drop me off. By the time I get to the US Airways ticket counter, I am usually about ready to collapse. Why in this day of age am I at the ticket counter? Well, SCIF doesn’t buy E-tickets, unless they _have_ too. Once I have my tickets in hand, I get to find another Skycap to push me the next 1/4 mile or longer journey to Security where the only good thing is being pushed through the line of people 120 deep.

I hate going through security.

The first thing I do is unpack my gear. Laptop, Video camera. All this stuff has to go into about 2 bins. Then off with the shoes, and support brace, which goes into a 3rd bin, where my cane is to follow. I can’t wear my low back support brace without somehow seeming suspicious. I then get handed a cheap plastic cane to go through the detector. If I’m lucky I won’t beep, or be Selective Service marked, because then I get the full once over; ( pat down, air jet puffed bomb sniffer, metal detector, or even now some TSA official can possibly see me nude with a special scanner?)

The security agency’s Web site indicates that the technology will be used initially as a secondary screening measure, meaning that only those passengers who first fail the standard screening process will be directed to the X-ray area.

Even then, passengers will have the option of choosing the backscatter or a traditional pat-down search.

I have a choice now;
I can choose to have somewhat naked pictures of me on a television screen, where some TSA person can peep on my junk, using some Backscatter X-Ray Technology.

Or;
I can get a nice painful pat down, which I do alert the TSA agent that I am in pain before starting. My back, legs, arms, and neck are quite sensitive to touch after being packed like a tuna. Only if the TSA person is being nice will I actually be allowed to use a cane to balance myself.

Going home through the airport is just as bad. The bus drops nowhere near the Great Lakes ticket counter, and then I have to wait sitting on the ground, for a Skycap. In Terminal 2 there aren’t benches around to sit down. WTF?

The trip through security is the same as before. Last time thanks to US Air, and a retiring pilot, I was made very very late for my next flight almost becoming stranded. Due to my late arrival I of course now had to be extra screened, which made it the last 2 times in that direction. The other times I guess is because I’m only 1 of maybe 5 passengers on the flight back to FHU.

I can’t win, I hate traveling.

The new X-ray machine will be in Terminal 4, which serves US Airways and Southwest Airlines, and handles nearly 80 percent of the airport’s passenger traffic. The security agency is already testing another anti-terrorism tool there called the Explosive Detection Trace Portal.

That machine, commonly known as a “puffer,” is also designed to screen people for explosives without pat-downs. It works by releasing several puffs of air on the passenger, and then analyzing dislodged particles from the person’s clothing for explosive residue.

TSA Backscatter Privacy Page

[update] Of course to see the demo video you have to be using Windows Media. Thanks, really, I wanted to see it, but I can’t seem to view them with my free operating system. Hey TSA, would it have been that difficult to use an open format?

SNA no free wifi

When I wrote about some of my travel experiences of last week, I forgot to mention that John Wayne Airport, SNA, no longer has free wireless internet access. The last time I went through there a few months ago, it was free. WTF, trying to charge 5 bucks for an hour of internet access. I got to the airport nice an early like a good traveler, the least they can do is provide some form of free entertainment. Watching the gate attendants isn’t my idea of fun.

PHX, Sky Harbour Internation airport had free wifi internet access, and also they put in some flat panel plasma TVs since my last time through. At least they had these ammenities in Terminal 4 on my way to Orange County. Terminal 2, gate D is still a shithole, but atleast it should have wifi still. I wouldn’t know as the connecting flight left me with 30 minutes to get between terminals, check in, and get selectively screened by the TSA, which includes bomb sniffing, and a pat down security search, which does not feel good on my back.

Yea, I just felt like ranting.
[tags]travel, PHX, SNA, California, Arizona, wifi, internet, entertainment[/tags]

Well, here I sit at the airport waiting for my next flight.

The attendants tried to put me on the wrong flight which just departed on it’s way to Washington DC.  My seat, 23C, was not even on the plane, which is how I figured out I was on the wrong plane.  The seating only went to row 22.

The internet access is OK, well it’s up and working, and allowing me to be less bored than I could be.  Fuckking shit
My flight just moved from where I’m at at gate a21, to A27, now I have to wait for someone to come push me.

ok more when I have a spot again.

I’ve taken up the new position at gate a27.  over here it seems that football is on the minds of travelers.  between the tv, blaring football sounds, every few minutes people go nuts, and scream fumble, or ohhhh.  yea.  I hate sports.

I have about an hour till boarding.  There is no attendant at my gate yet, and sitting here in this chair sucks.  I need to get up for a few minutes.  Then I’ll upload some pictures I just took.

That was cool.  I got 200Kbs uploading to flickr.  but for some really really odd reason, it did not like 3 of the 4 pictures I just uploaded.

attn friends.

What are you doing 2006.09.10 - 2006.09.15 ?

Well I’ll be in California again for some appointments. I’ll be staying in Costa Mesa, near Harbour Blvd, I believe.
Durring the days I only have a few appointments, which is the only time spoken for, but I would like to get lunch/dinner/hangout when I have some free time, which I should have plenty of. If I haven’t seen you in a while it’d be great lets make plans, but if time is precious I understand.

While I’m out there I’d like to get some fresh sushi. ( being in the desert has great disadvantages)

lunch

I had lunch today with my father, at a neat little vietnamese food restaurant in Santa Ana, near South Coast Plaza, named Saigon Cuisine. I had lunch there a few months ago, when I was last in California, and the owner recognized me from then. For lunch we has some very fresh, and tasty spring rolls, for an appetizer, followed by #53, charbroiled pork, shrimp, with rice noodles, and vegetables. The whole meal was very satisfying, and healthy. To drink we had Thai Iced Tea, and iced coffee with condensed milk, which gives a good buzz.
