As I wrote about at the end of 2006, the 714 area code is changing. Well after some time now these changes have been approved and the information about it distributed. The new area code if you haven’t heard is 657. The scheme they are using to implement this new area code is called an overlay. The best thing about the overlay scheme is it does not require customers to change their existing area code or phone number, which I am very happy about. Beginning August 23, 2008, you will have to dial 1+714, or 1+657 even when calling from within the geographic region. Not that difficult to remember considering you can start using this new procedure February 23, 2008. Phone numbers using the new area code will be assigned starting September 23, 2008.
